In the Old Testament times and when Jesus Christ walked on the earth, the common people did not have the ability to read the Word for themselves but they would listen to the scriptures when they were read by the scribes, Pharisees or chief priests. Now in the age of grace, it is available for every believer to read the Word and therein lie the riches of wisdom and knowledge. A knowledge of the depth of God's heart can be acquired when we READ the Word.
